With many Americans now preferring (or forced) to rent homes rather than buy, the demand for rental stock is on the increase. To help those looking for rentals properties, home search specialist Trulia has now added a rentals tab to its real estate search portal. It is estimated that 30% of those in the market to buy a home will wind up renting instead, either because they fail in their attempt to obtain finance or because the monthly repayments are beyond their perceived ability to pay.

Like a general property search, you can enter an area’s zip code and the number of bedrooms and bathrooms along with a minimum – maximum rental value. If you prefer, you can just enter in a state or city instead of the zip.

The search engine is reasonably quick and will return a list of real estate agents for the area selected. I did a general search for Baltimore, Maryland and the site returned 840 vacancies together with map. It’s a fast search so there is little lag between hitting go and seeing the results.

Fine tuning the search to find 3+ bedrooms and 2+ bathrooms was equally as quick and produced accurate results. Whether or not these listings were still available is unknown, but that relies on the listing agency removing the properties. As with property sales, there are photos on most properties that give you an idea of what they look like.

As a search engine for rental properties it is quite adequate so if you’re in the market for a rental or leasing property, check out what Trulia is now offering.
