Finding real estate in Washington DC can be difficult, especially if you have been used to searching by city and suburb. DC, of course, is comprised of neighborhoods rather than suburbs and some search tools are not equipped to handle this. Never fear, there are always solutions to problems.

One solution is to find a search tool that will enable you to search by neighborhood. However, these tools are only as good as the listing agent’s information. If they don’t enter a neighborhood when creating the listing, you will still be left in the dark. Fortunately, DC neighborhoods do have ZIP Codes so it’s simply a matter of looking up the ZIP Code for the neighborhood you’re interested in and entering that into the search field.

You should still check out a map to be sure you are entering the right ZIP Code. For example,  New York Avenue / Convention Center / Shaw / Penn Quarter / Eckington are all covered by 20001 while Downtown / Business District / Penn Quarter / Chinatown / Mt. Vernon Square are covered by 20004.  Of course, if you’re unsure, you can search on both codes. There is a list of Washington DC ZIP Codes for real estate published that will make life a little easier for you.

You can also find a real estate search tool that allows you to search by ZIP Code and neighborhood. This will ensure you hone in on the exact area if you need to be more precise. Washington DC is not like any other area so finding real estate that matches your criteria will take a little extra work.  But that doesn’t mean it’s any harder.
