Real estate in Washington DC is no different to any other part of the country. There are high priced homes, low priced homes, homes in high demand areas and homes in low demand areas. You can get a feel for what is happening real estate wise by searching through the MLS. You can get an even better feel for what is happening by jumping in the car and taking a meandering tour.

If you are looking to buy a home in Washington DC then what you get at street view can be a real eye-opener. There are many real estate professionals who will claim that the internet is the only way to go – while I agree it is a fabulous tool, being out there helps to fill in the blanks. What are the benefits of  touring a neighborhood? Let’s see.

For sale signs

For sale signs can tell you so much. You can find desperate sellers easily – they have ten for sale signs in their front yard (perhaps not ten, but you get the picture). You can also determine who the popular real estate agents are – there are pluses and minuses there as well.

The best real estate agents may be the hardest negotiators when it comes to trying to negotiate a bargain price. The worst real estate agents may have reputations for poor diligence.  Of course, it’s not true in every case but real estate agents don’t become popular by accident.

Amenities and Services

An MLS listing may say that the metro is two blocks away, but it doesn’t tell you that each cross road is a nightmare to cross. It may say there is a school or mall close by, but it won’t tell you they are almost ready for demolition. It’s not until you drive through the area that you get a real feel for the amenities and services on offer.

If you really want to feel the pulse of a neighborhood in DC, get in the car and go for a drive. You could learn a lot.
