Despite the bad economy and the poor condition of the real estate market – houses selling so cheaply and many foreclosures, etc. – the number of new applicants for real estate licensing is actually moving higher in some states. Interesting, as it’s a pretty challenging time to be in real estate or the mortgage business right now.

In New York state there’s been a 23% increase in licensed agents and brokers.   One theory is that there are a great many more unemployed people out there who are now looking for a new career.  It’s probably true, but in today’s rough market the truth is that new agents will have a much more difficult time just starting out than agents who began, say, ten years ago. But, real estate has always been a business looked upon as a wealth-building career, whether true or false.

And though this seems to have little to do with real estate, licenses for hairstyling, cosmetology and manicurists are down 45%.

Do-It-Yourself

Due to a poor economy, more folks are taking on the do-it-yourself approach. Do your hair yourself, your nails, etc. Strangely, there are also more FSBO (For Sale By Owner) sellers in real estate, and the growing trend to sell without a real estate professional is rising. This begs the question as to who is better at pegging the future of their business, a manicurist or a real estate agent?  Maybe they’re both right, and there will be a lot more home buying by people having bad hair days.
