This may sound a little strange, but for those looking to buy a new home, one of the most important steps is to let your real estate agent get to know you. I am not necessarily talking about inviting them out to dinner and opening your soul to them, but if a real estate agent has a fair idea of who you are, they will be in a much better position to help you find the right properties.

Real estate agents are not miracle workers (although some may think otherwise). If you give one a bare bones outline of the type of property you are looking for, they may be able to find several hundred to fit that description. By getting to know you, they may be able to narrow that down to properties that are close to schools, or shopping malls, or even public transport.

I can hear some say that this information should be a part of a buyers search criteria – and it should. But schools are not equal and neither are shopping malls. By getting to know you and your circumstances, your real estate agent can narrow down the properties that meet your criteria.

How can you help your real estate agent to get to know you a little better? Talk to them. When engaging a buyers agent, that agent is working exclusively for you. Together, you are a team with one aim – to find the most appropriate home for your needs at the best possible price. By helping your real estate agent, you are helping yourself achieve that aim.
