Here is a question that always sparks plenty of discussion. “Do I need a Realtor when buying or selling my property?” Often, the general consensus from a discussion like this is – ‘yes you do, but watch them because they are only in it for themselves’.  Often, this is true, but then it could be said of many professions and like all professions, there are good Realtor and bad Realtors.

Buyers and sellers should consult Realtors. They are experts in their field and generate their income by helping you. The trick is to find Realtors that are honest and who do work for you and who do have your best interests at heart. There are several ways to find a good Realtor – here are a few clues:

Length of time in business – how long has the Realtor been in business. This is not a perfect indication since new Realtors may be squeaky clean when it comes to looking after your interests – however, time is a first step.

Community reputation – the internet is a good place to look for information on Realtors. Often, you can just type in their name, either the business name or the agent’s name, and you may find reviews regarding their service.

Attitude – how does the agent treat you? Are they keen to get you out and inspecting homes, or are they prepared to let you look around at what is on offer and perhaps do some drive-by inspections.

MLS – do they encourage you to search the MLS for suitable properties, or do they try to steer you away from it? A respected agent will help you to use all the resources available to find your new home – and to sell your home.

Website – does the Realtor have a website that helps you to buy or sell your home or does their website simply promote their business.

Buying and selling property is a tricky business. You do need professional assistance to complete the process, professional help that enables both the buyer and the seller to receive value in the final transaction.
