You Can’t Beat The Knowledge Of A Local Expert
When it comes to real estate, and it doesn’t matter if you’re buying, selling, or leasing, you just can’t beat the knowledge and experience that comes with a local expert. In real estate, the local expert is going to be a local real estate agent. Real estate agents make their living by helping people buy, sell, or lease properties – if they don’t become an expert in their field and in their area, they’ll wind up going hungry.
So how do you find a local expert? You could look in the telephone directory, and while that will give you a list of all the real estate agents in an area, it won’t tell you much about them. You could, of course, ask an agent about their experience, but then I’ve never known anyone in any profession who was willing to down sell themselves – that’s a quick way to the poor house.
The Internet has become a good tool for finding out information about people and businesses. You can do a simple search for a person or business, then read all the reviews and any material that person or business has published. A word of warning when it comes to reviews, people are far more likely to complain online than they are to praise so don’t treat all complaints as gospel.
One area that is starting to bear fruitful results is social media. Sites such as Facebook have become more than just gossip sites. Real estate agents often have their own page on Facebook where they can interact with others – simply reading some of that interaction can give you an idea of their expertise and the standing that others hold them in.
You can fall back on traditional methods – using friends and relatives and asking them for any recommendations. There is one method that is often the very best – talk to prospective real estate agents and see who you can relate to, who appears to be willing to listen to you, and who is willing to talk to you. If they appear knowledgeable, and have been active in the area for a long time, and you can connect with them – then that real estate agent is most likely the best for you.
