What does the ideal real estate agent look like in 2010? What did they look like ten years ago? This is a hard question since everyone has different needs. However, there are four attributes that you could apply across the board to today’s real estate agents – if they meet all four attributes then you will have found your ideal real estate agent. You could abbreviate these four attributes to the word CITE – Commitment, Information, Technology & Expertise.

Commitment: is the agent committed to you or to someone else? Many are committed to their own interests first. Sure, real estate agents have to make a living too, however, their primary aim should be to provide you with a quality service where your satisfaction is their path to income, not the reverse.

Information: how much information can your real estate agent readily provide you with? Today’s real estate agent should be able to provide you with up-to-date listing as a buyer and the latest in prices (including sales prices) for your area as a seller. Having an email or SMS service that notifies you of the latest listings that meet your criteria is also important.

Technology: today’s real estate agent has a website that you can visit for information. They should also have, or link to, MLS search tools that make your search easier. Some agents also provide items like GPS devices to help you locate properties if you are new to an area.

Expertise: it goes without saying in today’s world that when dealing with anyone in any profession, the first thing you will expect is expertise. If your real estate is not an expert in the field of buying and selling real estate then you are not going to get a quality service. In fact, there is a real chance that mistakes will be made which could cost you tens of thousands of dollars.

Those attributes are fairly simple when first viewed, however, if you think about them carefully, they are all important to you as either a seller or buyer. Remember, if you are a seller, the buyer may well have someone representing them who does have all these attributes. You want to meet them on equal footing when it comes to an agency that is meant to represent you. Naturally, the reverse is also true; if you are a buyer, you want a competent real estate agent negotiating the best price for you.

So the question is – can you CITE your real estate agent?
