It’s not a part of the home buying process that many people would consider but it is slowly growing in popularity. What am I referring too? Social media, of course. How can it help you? Do you have a couple of hours?

Social media, as the name suggests, is all about being social. Being social means talking to other people and where is the best place to find information about different areas? From people who live in those areas.  There is more to buying a home than just finding the right house. Real estate agents can point you to hundreds of homes across the country that perfectly fit your criteria. But a house does not make a home. It is the environment and what comes with the area that makes a house a home.

Social media can help you identify areas where you may ‘fit in’. Facebook and Myspace are two good places to start.  You can find information related to schooling, public transport, crime rates, traffic problems, shopping malls, just to name few. Social media can often present a more realistic view of an area compared to the glossy view provided by real estate sellers or the dark view sometimes portrayed in the media.

I do urge a word or two of caution. Social media can be an ideal place to find information to help your home buying decision making and it can be a great place to find new friends. Social media is abused by some for nefarious reasons so be very careful about identifying yourself or the location of your new home when you make a final decision. Don’t agree to meet people face-to-face until you are sure of their bonafides.
